WHAT IS DSL? DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. DSL provides a digital connection through the twisted copper wire of an ordinary phone line by installing a DSL MODEM which adds a CARRIER SIGNAL to an existing line or to newly installed wire. The same line can continue to carry TRADITIONAL DIALTONE or the line may be used for DSL signals only. As this was typoed, most last mile carriers, including QWEST, offer a BARE DSL with no battery or dial tone. Zeke suggests you have one old fashioned voice line with your DSL even though  the Federal and State Tax burden inflates the cost of POTS (plain old telephone service) by about $10 per month.  The reasoning is that you wil have standard 911 service in a power outage.  A DSL connection may be used for any type of service that can use digital transmission.. For example DSL can be used for a private a security camera or credit card network, but the most common use is to connect to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as ZEKE'S.

WHAT DOES QWEST PROVIDE? When you order a DSL circuit from QWEST, they plug in a DSL MODEM at their end of your line, and you plug in a DSL modem at your end. The modem at the QWEST side feeds into a virtual data switch called the DSL CLOUD.  Within this virtual switch, QWEST provides a PERMANENT VIRTUAL CONNECTION between your line, and your choice of end points, including a selection of INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS such as ZEKE'S.

WHAT about the MODEM? You must have a DSL modem capable of PPPOA, but do not need to buy or rent a new modem. Any standard DSL modem (from a yard sale or EBay, for example) should work just fine. However, if you buy or rent your modem from QWEST, they can provide connection and modem tech support at the same time.
